Most of the special effects in movies like Life of Pi and Avatar are largely done thru computer graphics RIGHT NOW. That tiger that looked real was computer generated. The only reason video games ain't got graphics like that is because the computational power required to do that is really expensive TODAY. However, computing power is decreasing in cost exponentially. That is why in 10 years the technology that now costs Hollywood millions of dollars to produce can be replicated in a video game for a couple of hundred dollars.
Computing power is increasing exponentially while cost is decreasing exponentially. What that means is that we have a long ways to go before we reach the peak of computational graphics. Alot of the industry leaders think that we are only 10 years away from PHOTOREALISTIC video games being rendered in real time. What that means is that the graphics of video games in 2025 will be indistinguishable from real life.
If you find this hard to believe then read up on Moore's law and the works of Ray Kurzweil. What seems like decades away is really only a few years away because of the exponential rate at which computers are advancing.

None of that stuff is being done on a single computer.....they use render farms with the best cooling systems possible. I'm not saying we won't see any big advancements but its going to take alot more than computers becoming more powerful.
They would have to find a way to put 10 - 15 powerful computers into 1 for your average consumer.
EDIT: Also none of the stuff in the movies are interactive, meaning less calculations than video games have to do( I do game programming as a hobby ). Theres a ton of calculations that go into the littliest stuff ( angle/speed/collision detection, what to do after objects collide ). This is part of the reason why trailers look better than the actual gameplay.
