ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions need a safety. Former Buffalo Bills safety George Wilson needs a job. Both are willing to see if this might be a good match.
Wilson was released by the Bills earlier this week and already has a visit set up with the Detroit Lions, according to CBSSports.com's Jason LaCanfora. Buffalo also released linebacker Nick Barnett, who failed a physical, when it parted ways with Wilson.
The release of the 31-year old strong safety was more of a cost-cutting measure than a reflection of Wilson's ability.
"Moves like the ones we've made today are never easy, but we have to do what's best for our team and keep moving forward," general manager Buddy Nix previously said in a statement released by the team. "We've got some good young players on our roster, who we feel are ready to take the next step up. And they will now have the opportunity to do so."
Wilson was voted team captain five times in his career, and was the Bills' union representative, but his release saved the team nearly $3 million.
Last season, Wilson started in 16 games and finished with 104 tackles. He has 412 tackles and 12 interceptions in his seven-year NFL career.
