Default Do you buy that Mike Tyson didn't lift in his prime?

Apparently he did only calisthenics aside from shrugs. Then again I got that info from the same source that said he did 800 dips and 1000 pushups and 2000 crunches daily and only ate steak and pasta

Calisthenics get you right, especially dips, if you can only do one exercise thats what you should be doing. It wouldn't surprise me if he did some weight lifting though.

i looked up his training routine a few years back. An official one. While in training camp for a fight he ate only steak, pasta, and fruit juice. Trained for 3 different sessions from like 7am-9pm (each session about 3 hours long)

and did do 800 pushups/ 1000 dips.

Training for the golden gloves I did 500 pushups/500dips 250pullups every other day. What I did was coupled with a 5x5 routine and took me a little more than an hour. So I can imagine a professional elite fighter being able to do more easily.

Sonofagod

Why is it necessary to do 500 dips and 250 pullups in one day? What was their logic behind that?

Cus wouldn't let him lift. Remember Mike is a natural beast who has crazy genetics. He's been the same size since 16, basically 5'10 190lbs. Freak of nature.

Boxers used to do a lot of pullups

That's where most of your upper body punching strength comes from

Ever boxed? Those come in handy for strength and stamina, plus it keeps your muscles loose which is essential for boxing. Weights keep you tight but all of those calisthenics make you STRONG.

Sidenote:This is what helped me reach my weight lifting peaks back in the days. Calisthenics before lifting will have you lifting CRAZY numbers.

You do em explosively. I was a brawler and it gets you used to throwing around your weight. In addition it added hardness to the body as resistance against body punching.

It also got me strong. They told me to quit lifting and do calisthenics, so instead i did both

my lifts all around shot up. I still do it like that today and am benching 305x4, BB row 305x4, weighted pullups +155 @ 172lbs.

When you do em often, as your muscles get harder, it gets very easy. At the time I was busting out 60-100 pushups each set. 50-70 dips each set. 20-40 pullups each set. So it only took like 5 or so sets to finish each exercise

It also helps mentally. Doing that many in one set is BORING. But it teaches you to have the will to push on even through pressure (when your muscles are burning and mind is screaming to stop).

Yes, EVERYTHING is done explosive, just like you're fighting. You train like you fight. We did our exercises in 3 minute (1 round) increments.
