i know man, thats why im not a big fan. I think its effective if u can get to that type of flexibility...i mean, i can (or could) get to a solid rubber guard, but couldnt hit the lotus position. Its good in the sense of MMA, if u get to that position, u basically are safe and cant get hit...i understand its usage, im just not a giant fan (maybe bc im not THAT flexible)

I've been thinking about training. I was fascinated as a kid, and used to get books/videos on the martial arts as a kid. I considered Capoeira but I don't think that's for me.

Easily the best martial art imo. The discipline and brotherhood in the BJJ world is 2nd to none.

Im not gonna lie..ive never really been into martial arts til i took bjj. I boxed before. Muay Thai is a great workout from what i hear tho. Never hurts to try and see what you like.



Definitely consider BJJ tho. Too bad Heelhook cant roll or else he and i would have a min rivalry

Jiu jitsu is an awesome workout. I took a little over a year off from training but now i'm ready to go back. I have a lot of things going on in life right now but God willing I can go back to the mats and train safely.

I play a lot of x guard and deep half guard but i have been training for years. My advice to the new guys is that you practice the basics before x- guard. Practice the regular hook sweep before x guard. The x- guard will come naturally after that.

Also, im not trying to diss 10th planet because I know eddie bravo is very good...but I feel like he teaches stuff that is really only suited for certain people. I used to play a lot of rubber guard...I was flexible real flexible but I feel like it kills you hip mobility. I plan on training a long time and I want to use techniques that are not attribute based. You prob will lose flexibility when older...and I feel it would put a lot of wear and tear on hips and knees...so make sure you know basic armbar, traingles, oomaplatas before the rubberguard stuff if you are going to play it

Buy these 3 books FIRST of all.

The guard
Strategic guard
Passing the guard
- the best books i own along with jiujitsu university.

My style is closed/open guard to choke/sweep. This is where i pretty much do everything from. If im not in closed guard i have some kind of butterfly hook where im trying to get a sweep going. I tend to keep a hand in the collar at all times when im not playing around when i do open guard. I love collar chokes. I love choking people. I love gi tail chokes from side control and mount. I love triangles from guard. My submissions from bottom are so so. My sweeps are better. I learn sweeps from everywhere.

Best advice is to learn how to escape everything, establish a game and drill it repetitively. Try not to soak up too many techniques because you're mind can become scatter brained and you wont focus on establishing a game for yourself. I call my style ADD because i cant focus on one method for too long before i get bored and want to try something else.

Dont look at training as needing to win all the time. You'll learn more putting yourself in bad positions then you will smashing everyone. There are guys who focus on smashing so much that when they get in tournaments with killas they fold because they have developed a bully mentality to training and cant handle the pressure of being in a bad spot. Train often. 3 - 7 days a week if you can but if you are really in a slump, get at least 1 day a week unless you're physically ill/injured. Skills and conditioning can deplete faster then you realize.

I have no advice on diet because mine is trash. If you're trying to be a super champion you have to quit your job. If you want to be a local champ you have to train 6 days a week. Open mat and classes. 3 hours a day basically.

Always identify your weaknesses and work them against lower belts. If you know you're weak on back escapes let people who arent as good as you take your back then try to bring it to your A game against someoen near your skill level. Or just let someone of your skill level take your back. Its whatever. I had issue escaping side control as a blue belt so i just let the biggeset guys always put me in side control. Getting used to the pressure from a bigger/stronger dude will make you stronger against people your size.

Lifting weights is not a bad thing. Sometimes when two people are equally skilled, the person who is stronger will win. I see eddie bravo at 24 hour fitness hitting weights. The cats who dont like marcelo garcia pretty much train, all the time. Lifting weights makes training easier but power is not a real substitute for technique. Some people will power through techniques and succeed but they will be gassed after a couple rolls. I stopped lifting when i started jits and i started lifting again after i got close to my brown belt. I was operating the whole time on technique so now having some strength behind my technique makes me explosive when i Need to be instead of relying on strength to do everything.

Roll with tough guys. Dont be ashamed to tell someone *hey dont crank that sub so hard* At the same time, dont shy away from tough opponents. Again, its called training, not competing. You have to put your pride to the side and realize some people, even some lower belts, will catch you sometimes or be out right better then you because they're gifted. Try to roll with tough students because the mental toughness you get rolling with killers will make your game better. If you always roll with lower belts and never really test yourself your game will be good but not as good as it can truely be.

Jiujitsu ethics.

1. coach white belt. - white belt comes in knowing nothing trying to tell everyone how to do their techniques. The worst time to do this is when hes putting it on you. If you know you're about to get subbed in a roll, dont stop to tell someone *o o a little to the left to ge the sub, OO NICE NICEEEEEEE * Dont be ashamed of gettin tapped

2. Wash your gi every time. Everytime you use it on the mat, wash it. We all smell your dirty gi and its disgusting. Not to mention you put people at risk for skin infections

3. Dont curse and get upset when you get tapped out. You're going to get tapped. The only way you'll learn is getting tapped. No one became good by not getting tapped. Accept it, dont look around like *who saw that* Slap hands and roll again. You're only as good as the last tap.

4. Dont try to injure your training partners. If you have that arm bar and you feel you really got it in deep and are pulling it hard ask that man "hey are you good" before you pull harder or flat out let it go if he doesnt have the good sense to tap. There is no tap or snap with your training partners. Thats for tournaments

5. Do the drill your teacher shows you. Dont be doing moves you saw on youtube when your coach is telling you to practice what he showed you. Hes a black belt, he knows what moves work the best and is giving you a foundation to help you establish your own art with. Listen to him and do what he says.

6. Dont talk unwarranted trash about your training partners. Word travels fast and men gossip. Definately dont talk trash about your coach.

My professor is having a seminar on Sunday with another black belt at our gym. Cant wait for that. Hes quietly becoming one of the rising stars in the BJJ world. I've been slacking so bad with class because of work. Next week though ill be back on the mats

Not dissin any other form but I believe 10th planet is the next evolution in bjj. Doesnt really focus on flexibility like u would believe. And to to the poster who inquired about striking I take muay thai too, originally thats what I joined the gym, although im nice with the hands because of previous experience with boxing, I absolutely fell in love with jitz. Thanks for the reccomendation on jitzu university @Mowgli. Great pickup. Im at that point now where I train 5 times a week and just countdown the days
My diet is complete **** tho, its hard cuz I just moved out and its hard to maintain a good diet. Any advice on a solid diet where I can still enjoy good food but not eat like complete **** that would be relative for jitz. Also, workout wise on the side, do the drills I posted by jason scully and kettlebells, my strength in bjj improved so much

So far as diet. I would just eat as clean as you can. I only really eat carbs before class..but thats because i train in the AM. Make sure youre getting enough protein too. Drink lots of water.

The rubber guard is all about flexibility. If you have their arm trapped and angle off to the side then you can use less flexibility but a good guy will usually square up with you and kill the angle....and then its all flexibility. I played rubber guard a lot a couple of years ago. I did all the butterfly stretches and I was able to get my ankle behind my neck. I used it mostly to oomoplata and sweep and had a lot of success against purple and brown belts in no gi but I took it out of my game because I wanted to rely more on hip mobility and angling.

If you watch Eddie bravo, he dosent even angle off....he uses all flexibility. Again, he's a very good grappler but his style is attribute based. I also dont like his lockdown half guard cause it kills your own mobility...but if you like the style then stay with it.

I also don't think 10th planet is the evolution of jiu jitsu...look at the mendes bros. These dudes changed the way all the top level guys are playing their game. Jiu jitsu is evoloving, but I dont think 10th planet is paving the way..Just my opinion

i disagree..but thats just me. I love playing the half. I use the lockdown to set up other stuff. Lockdown, wrist control, you can get the kimura, or a sweep with kimura position. Lots of stuff..but again. I prefer being in half than any other guard
