It never made logistical sense to me that for 15 years a wrestler could be unbeatable and then be begging the faces for mercy all of a sudden. I understand it could cause more people to cheer thus defeating the whole point of being a heel but Austin and Rock heel didn't really change their in ring mechanics when they were heels did they?
I do remember in 2000 when wcw randomly decided to turn Hogan face again he gradually began re-implementing the hulk up until he wore the red and yellow again on nitro.
but wrestling was always funny that way where a face would be unbeatable but then run and cheat and lose when they are heel.

the hulk up was a spiritual connection between hulk and his hulkamaniacs. He needed to draw that energy from his fans(just like Goku would draw energy for a spirit bomb). With the fans against him, he couldn't do it.
Like you grasped, its just the difference between working heel and working face. That difference is not talked about enough. As a face hogan was 'calling on the hulkamaniacs' and as a heel, well, he's a sneaky jerk so he just pokes you in the eye.
A lot of wrestlers are good at doing the two things differently. Undertaker is phenomenal at it. HBK is pretty good at it. Y2J is as well, which is how he can go back and forth so well. I didn't know alberto del rio works so good as a face for example.
Low key, CENA is good working heel but nobody has seen it since ONS2 vs RVD. He was working straight up heel in that match and its one of his best ever. He was working pretty much heel vs rock (his arrogance costing him the match at the end). but not full blown.
That acute difference is one of my favorite things in wrestling. It actually makes perfect logical sense.
IT WOULDN'T BE FAIR, BROTHER! THE NWO AND HULKAMANIA AT THE SAME TIME, DUDE? MIGHT AS WELL JUST END PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING, BECAUSE THAT IS THE FINAL LEVEL, JACK!

It really would be unfair. The swag of the new world order, and the prayers and vitamins combined? thats a scary sight.

Not sure if face turned was planned or they went with it after the crowds reaction to Hogan.Hogan looked genuinely shocked when he got that reaction during his entrance

makes sense

Yeah, like when Goku told Gohan he could bounce back the spirit bomb cause he was pure of heart. THAT REAL ***** ****.
... . . unrelated, Rey Mysterio getting bounced off the side of that trailer by Kevin Nash was totally Chiaotzu blowing himself up on Nappa's back for no reason.

Hollywood hogan was technically a heel vs rock at mania and he hulked up during the match but he kind of turned face during/after so that might not count
and its not always going to make perfect sense, you have to suspend some disbelief in the story aspect and say "well, instead of drinking milk/taking vitamins, hogan's now drinking beers and smoking cigars...his hulkamania powers aren't their cause of that" or whatever
his whole demeanor was different when he turned heel. All black, black stubble, a gang of goons, being bigger then a lot of his opponents but wanting to humiliate guys without having to really put too much effort and trying to find the easy way out instead of perservering and being the guy that worked hard to be the best in the industry.
Maybe if ya'll ****** wasn't so hard on him when he was getting bounced from the playoffs all those years he wouldn't have to respond like this. Bron overcharging for what they did to Chris Webber...
